Political Philosopher Josh Cohen from MIT to Stanford...

...with appointments in Political Science, Law and Philosophy. More details here.

At Stanford, Cohen will join his former student, the political philosopher Debra Satz, which will certainly make Stanford a quite attractive choice for students of political philosophy. Cohen's appointment, strengthening as it does Stanford's visibility in value theory (an area of relative weakness previously), may also push Stanford into the overall top five in the U.S. in next year's surveys.

Professor Cohen tells me that he will continue to co-edit the stimulating Boston Review, which will also continue to be a Boston-based publication.

更进一步的报道:

Political Philosopher Cohen from MIT to Stanford

The distinguished political philosopher Joshua Cohen, a longtime member of the Departments of Philosophy and Political Science at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology, has accepted a senior offer from Stanford University, where he wiil be half-time in Political Science, and one-quarter each in Law and Philosophy, as well as direct a new Center for Global Justice. He will start next fall. (He will, however, continue to co-edit the stimulating Boston Review, which will also remain Boston-based.)

Stanford Law School has been one of the few top law schools to have not had a philosopher on the faculty, so this is a major appointment for them, and a welcome affirmation of the importance of philosophy in American legal education. Stanford also plans to start a number of new joint JD/PhD programs, including in philosophy. I'm not sure Professor Cohen will be enough to anchor such a program (especially given how his time will be spread), though clearly students interested in issues at the intersection of law and political philosophy will do well to look at Stanford in the years ahead for the joint degree.

早前Leiter在其博客上发布的相关消息:

Stanford University has made a senior offer to the distinguished political philosopher Joshua Cohen at MIT, which would have him jointly appointed in the Departments of Philosophy and Political Science and in the Law School (which has, historically, been a rather philosophy-unfriendly place, so this is a striking development). In addition, the Philosophy Department at Stanford has offered a long-term (ten-year) part-time appointment to Brian Skyrms (decision and game theory, philosophy of science, metaphysics and epistemology) at the University of California at Irvine who, among his many other accomplishments and distinctions, is one of only two philosophers elected to the National Academy of Sciences (the other is Patrick Suppes, now emeritus at Stanford).

特别值得注意的是,Cohen将主持一个全球正义研究中心。而他在MIT的时候,和阿马蒂亚·森等一起开过全球正义的课程,课程提纲目前还可以从MIT的网站上下载。
